Get Attention NOW! How to Craft an Effective Billboard Headline

POA - Blog_February 2024-02

Creating a compelling headline for a billboard is crucial for grabbing attention and conveying your message effectively.

What is a billboard headline?

A billboard headline is a concise and attention-grabbing message displayed on a billboard, typically along highways or busy urban areas.

What is the goal of a billboard headline?

The goal of a billboard headline is to quickly capture the attention of passing drivers and pedestrians, conveying a message or promoting a product or service effectively.

Here are 5 things to remember when crafting a billboard headline.

  1. Emphasize a Clear Message
    • Focus on a single, powerful message or idea you want to convey.
    • Make sure the message aligns with your brand and resonates with your target audience.
    • All About Action: Use strong words that evoke emotion or prompt action. Powerful verbs and impactful adjectives can make a difference.
    • Throw in a call-to-action that’s impossible to resist. Whether it’s visiting your website, trying out a demo, or just yelling, “I need that!” – make it clear and compelling.
  1. Highlight Benefits or Solutions
    • Clearly communicate the benefits of your product or service.
    • Emphasize how your offering solves a problem or meets a need.
    • Use humor to be memorable! Studies have shown ads that make people laugh get remembered and are shared with friends and family.
    • Evoke emotion with your ad.
  1. Keep it Concise
    • Billboard headlines should be brief and to the point. Aim for simplicity and clarity.
    • Simplicity is Your BFF: We get it; you have a groundbreaking product or service. But remember, a billboard isn’t the place for a novel. Keep it short, snappy, and straight to the point.
    • Think of it as a tweet for the highway.
    • Stick to 6-10 words that pack a punch.
  1. Prioritize Readability
    • Ensure that the text is large enough to be read from a distance.
    • Test readability from different angles and distances.
    • Use a legible font and high-contrast colors.
  1. The “So What?” Test
    • Before you finalize your headline, ask yourself the “So What?” question.
    • If your message doesn’t evoke a reaction or response, go back to the drawing board.
    • Make it so compelling that even the most uninterested commuter can’t help but raise an eyebrow.
